Animal welfare. Module description

Module 2 developed to provide students with higher education with knowledge and skills regarding studying the constituent factors of the living conditions of the organism, with which it is in a constant dynamic relationship. Forms a system of approaches for evaluating the aspects of the external environment for the adaptation of the animal organism and its functioning on the temporal and spatial rhythm set by the genetic code. The module’s purpose is for higher education students to acquire scientific and practical knowledge in the field of veterinary medicine and the technology of production and processing of animal husbandry products. The module program contains educational material that substantiates from a scientific point of view the essential tasks of the professional activity of veterinary medicine specialists and the technology of production and processing of livestock products, including the rational organization of the sanitary regime of enterprises, which ensures the prevention of both animal and human diseases, involves the study of theoretical basics of ethology, well-being, and conditions of keeping animals, according to European requirements.

In particular, Module 2 focuses on the role of animal welfare in livestock production to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.:

Basic knowledge of the Module 2:

  • Національні та міжнародні правові наслідки та обмеження щодо благополуччя тварин National and international legal implications and restrictions regarding animal welfare
  • Сучасні та інноваційні методи/технології для підвищення та оцінки благополуччя у тварин у тваринництві

Modern and innovative methods/technologies for the increase and assessment of animal welfare in livestock production

  • Благополуччя тварин при транспортуванні та торгівлі живими тваринами

Animal welfare in transport and trade of live animals

  • Забій тварин, евтаназія

Slaughter of animals, euthanasia

The structure of the module provides for the following training formats:

  • Lectures: Basic understanding of animal welfare based on interactive lectures.
  • Educational visits on farms: Learning practical skills by visiting farms that adhere to the principles of animal welfare
  • Practical lessons: Application of acquired theoretical knowledge in practice by performing practical tasks .
  • Case study: Analysis of real scenarios of application of animal welfare principles in practice.
  • Discussion: Discussion of topical issues regarding the in-depth study of Module course topics.

After completing Module 2, students of higher education are able to:

  • Determine the main principles of animal welfare
  • Understand the components of animal welfare
  • Analyze the benefits of animal welfare for production and sustainable development of animal husbandry.
  • Apply the principles of animal welfare to improve their health and increase the efficiency of livestock production on cattle, pig, and poultry farms.
