Cooperation with partner projects in Ukraine
On 2-3 October, an online conference “Working together to ensure the welfare of farm animals in Ukraine” was held to mark World Day for Farmed Animals.
The aim of the event was to raise awareness of the importance of harmonising national legislation on farm animal welfare in line with EU requirements as well as implementing animal welfare requirements during the housing, slaughter and transport of farm animals.
Dr Nataliia Hryshchenko, Associate Professor of the Department of Technologies in Poultry, Pig and Sheep Breeding, Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Aquatic Bioresources, NULES, presented the results of the SULAWE project in her report ” Necessity to update curricula of professional educational institutions of Ukraine according to national legislation on animal welfare” at a session on the transformation of Ukraine towards ensuring the welfare of farm animals.
During the discussion the participants, among other things, talked about the state of harmonisation of Ukrainian legislation with EU requirements, the responsibilities of market operators keeping farm animals, the system of staff training and the state of implementation of the state control system. All agreed on the need to strengthen coordination between projects in Ukraine in order to increase their effectiveness and achieve synergies.
The conference was attended by representatives of international projects such as SAFOSO, QFTP, EU4SaferFood, SULAWE, as well as staff from trade unions and associations, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine and the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection (SSUFSCP).
