The International Online Conference “Politics – Business – Science – Education: Sustainable Poultry Production in Ukraine”
On October 17, 2024, the International Online Conference “Politics – Business – Science – Education: Sustainable Poultry Production in Ukraine” was held at Poltava State Agrarian University as part of the implementation of the Erasmus+ SULAWE project. The event was supported by the Poltava Regional Military Administration, Ukrainian Corporation for Industrial Meat Production Tvarynprom, Scientific and Methodological Center for Higher and Pre Higher Education, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, Lviv National University of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology named after S. Z. Gzhytskyi, and Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University. The event was attended by more than 109 people from 6 countries (Ukraine, Germany, Sweden, Slovenia, Denmark, Uganda, Bulgaria, and the United Kingdom).
The conference program consisted of three sessions: the main session, session 1 “Legislative framework and requirements for the poultry industry on the way to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union”, session 2 “Transformation of the Ukrainian poultry industry towards sustainable development and welfare”, as well as a panel discussion with recognized international and Ukrainian experts who discussed specific issues that are important for farm specialists, managers at various levels and scientists.
The conference was moderated by Anatolii Shostia, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work of PSAU.
The conference participants were welcomed by Serhii Frolov, Director of the Department of Agricultural Development of Poltava Regional State Administration, Oleksandr Halych, Rector of Poltava State Agrarian University, and Heinrich Schule, Professor at the University of Nuremberg-Gaislingen (Germany) and SULAWE Project Manager. In their addresses, they emphasized the importance of ensuring the welfare of farm animals and poultry and adherence to the principles of sustainability, which will ensure the harmonious development of the global world, regions, countries, companies and communities within the capacity of ecosystems to recover and ensure a comfortable living for present and future generations.
The main session included the following presentations: “Status, Problems and Prospects of Animal Protection in Ukraine” (Vitaliy Nedosekov, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, Ukraine), ‘Trends and Trends in Poultry Production in the EU’ (Inga Thiemann, Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, Germany).
The session “Legislative framework and requirements for the poultry industry on the way to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union” featured the following presentations: “Animal welfare during turkey fattening. Legislative framework and requirements of supermarkets” (Oleksandr Kulichenko, Murgut Carzfen, Germany), ‘Veterinary and sanitary requirements for import of poultry into the customs territory of Ukraine’ (Natalia Shcherbakova, Poltava State Agrarian University, Ukraine).
The session “Transformation of the Ukrainian poultry industry towards sustainable development and welfare” featured the following presentations: “High-quality feed is the basis of poultry welfare” (Anton Babko, Yednist Group, Ukraine), ‘Current state and prospects of poultry development in modern conditions’ (Natalia Prokopenko, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, Ukraine), ‘Importance of feed for sustainable poultry production’ (Emma Ivarsson, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden). The panel discussion “Prospects for animal welfare and sustainable development of livestock in Ukraine” was attended by: Ruslan Bryk – Chief Technologist, Indelik, Ukraine; Vadym Karatniuk – Leading Zootechnician, Vinnytsia Poultry Farm, Myronivsky Hliboproduct, Ukraine; Inga Thiemann – Professor at the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück, Germany; Oleksandra Levchenko – Director of Flowers Bro, Ukraine; Natalia Prokopenko, Professor at the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, Ukraine; Svitlana Usenko, Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Food Technologies, Poltava State Agrarian University, Ukraine.
Overall, the conference was held at a high level in a businesslike and friendly atmosphere. We are confident that the productive work of the conference participants will become a solid foundation for new research, projects, and solutions to ensure the welfare and sustainability of the Ukrainian poultry industry.
