Teaching young people the basics of sustainability assessment application of the “Rise” tool
As part of the implementation of the SULAWE-ERASMUS-EDU-2022-CBHE (101083023) project, “Sustainable Livestock Production and Animal Welfare (SULAWE)”, a workshop “RISE – a tool for assessing the sustainability of agricultural enterprises” was held on February 6, 2025. The event was attended by students of NUBiP, as well as teachers and young scientists from NUBiP and PSAU.
Developed by the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH-HAFL), the RISE programme is supported by a global network of consultants who provide advice on implementing sustainability projects, farm assessments, etc. So far, this methodology has been successfully applied in different countries of the world to advise businesses, farmers, researchers and sustainability professionals. RISE is currently used by more than 5,500 farms in 64 countries.
Last year, as part of the project, some teachers received specialised training, gained experience in using the RISE programme and assessed individual enterprises in Ukraine.
During the workshop, participants received information from speakers about the practical experience of using RISE to assess the sustainability of production on two different farms:
1) Farm for breeding goats and production of craft products “DOBRO-KRAFT”;
2) Large industrial farm for breeding dairy cattle LLC “Yastrubchanske” and milk production.
The speakers clearly demonstrated how the assessment is conducted, what issues are important, what assessment philosophy is embedded in the program algorithm, etc.
Workshop participants took part in a lively discussion and expressed their desire to assess additional farms.
